I first discovered Barrie Knitwear when I was admiring a selection of their pieces in the summer of 2015 at Kirna Zabête in New York City’s Soho. I was stopped by the whimsical patterns made in the fine colorful cashmere yarn. The sales associate noticed how I lingered in front of the collection and she mentioned to me, “Did you know that they also make the cashmere sweaters for Chanel?” Being a huge Chanel fan, I was even more intrigued. I ended up leaving the store with a gray-blue scarf patterned with little lilac and pink blooms. Over the last two years, I’ve been watching their collections closely and adding bits and pieces to my own collection each season.

Based in Hawick, Scotland, Barrie Knitwear was founded at the beginning of the 20th century by Walter Barrie and Robert Kersel. It is one of the finest cashmere manufacturers in the country. Barrie had produced knitwear for Chanel for over 25 years, including the brand’s famous two-tone cardigans, before it was acquired by Chanel in October of 2012. At the time, it’s parent company had gone into administration and Chanel saved it from closure. Barrie launched it’s own collection in the winter of 2014/2015. Read more about Barrie here.

I fell in love with the intricate details – the fringes, the knots, the embroidery – much of it done by hand – on each piece. Whether it be a sweater or knitted hat or fingerless gloves – each design is so unique and the patterns so fun and playful.

When I first purchased this hat and pair of fingerless gloves, I didn’t end up buying the matching scarf. After wearing them for a winter season, I decided I really wanted a scarf that would go with them. Maria from the Paris shop helped me locate this one from their “Star Games” 2016 collection. I love that it reminds me of the Atari games I used to play with my brother when we were kids. Merci Maria!

As an interior designer, I couldn’t help but fall in love with these cashmere stools they had in the dressing room of the space they occupied this past summer. I just had to snap a photo of how great the sweater looked on the little woolen cubes.

I try to visit the Barrie store in Paris on each of our trips. They recently relocated to a newly designed space at 22 rue Cambon right across the street from Chanel’s flagship boutique. Take a peek as to what the shop looked like on my last visit there there during fashion week this fall. Most recently Karl Lagerfeld designed Lesage embroidered oversized sweaters exclusive to the Paris shop. There are three designs featuring landscapes that represent the United States, Europe and Japan. Stop in to see them if you get a chance.

Note to anyone from Barrie who might be reading this – if it is ever possible to visit the design studio or factory, please let me know as I would love to see where all the magic happens ❤️
